What’s Sonic Scoring?
Putting a razor blade on a sonic toothbrush to work as a lame — what?? At first I thought my husband’s idea was ludicrous. But then we built it and well… now I use it all the time and can’t imagine ever going back to the old way.
With a Sonic Lame, you can score clean cuts slowly, precisely, and deliberately. You don’t have to be afraid of the dough sticking to the lame, which means you don’t need to slash your dough frantically (or “vigorously”, as they always tell you to do!).
Here’s a video in real-life tempo, no slow-motion:
Sonic scoring also makes it easy to cut more intricate patterns:
How does sonic scoring work?
The sonic toothbrush holder makes the blade vibrate super-fast. That’s why it sticks less to the dough, making it possible to score slower and more steadily. You have more control over your scoring than with traditional lames.
The cuts are cleaner, too, and so’s the blade. You can use the Sonic Lame to make many cuts in a row without having to clean the blade in-between.
The straight blade holder is most suited for straight cuts and intricate patterns. The curved one is most suited for “ear cuts” and bigger, curved patterns.
Here’s what other home bakers said about the Sonic Lame:
It’s amazing and I love it! It’s like scoring loaves with a light saber!
Mark, Texas
It’s amazing. I get perfect scoring even on soft unrefridgerated dough!
Josie, Hong Kong
Honestly… this product is a game changer!!! AMAZING.
Hilary, England
The lame is awesome. I got bread ears!
Andrea, California
The Sonic Lame is great. I use it at every bake and I just love it. It’s an ingenious tool and my sourdough bread has never looked so good until the Sonic Lame.
Barbara, Florida
I always have issues scoring dough (especially wet dough) because I’m never confident enough to quickly swipe the blade across the dough. The Sonic Lame made it very easy to slowly go across the dough making sure I have a nice deep cut.
Daniel, New Jersey
It scores higher hydration doughs easily and gives me less panic over the blade sticking.
Joe, Texas
I could take my time when scoring. I can angle the blade to my liking and was able to cut deeper than my usual lame.
Norf, Singapore
How can you start sonic scoring?
Please note:
Due to sourcing issues of a critical part of the Sonic Lame, I am currently unable to produce and sell any more Sonic Lames. I’m working hard on figuring out a solution. Please send me an email to Nicola@proofperfected.com if you want to be put on the waitlist to be first to receive Sonic Lames once they’r back in store!
For those of you who have some tools and feel confident, you can build a DIY version of the straight Sonic Lame at home. I’m happy to share how to do that. Send me an email to nicola@proofperfected.com and I’ll let you know how to do that.
Happy Sonic Scoring!
